Darton Comm. College to drop wrestling at end of season

Letter from AD states that "due to significant decreases in revenue, continued decline in the enrollment, and the need to operate in a fiscally responsible and sustainable manner, we are going through a series of budget cuts at Darton St College. This includes elimination of certain staff positions, reductions in scholarships, cuts in operating expense, and the elimination of sports, including wrestling"

 

 

Crappy situation as they are the only community college and the only public school with wrestling in Georgia.

Of course Darton State was the site of a tragic situation involving some of its wrestlers back in 2013. Some wrestlers collapsed in the heat while on an outdoor run, with one -- Ben Richards -- dying days later. Here's a link to the story I wrote:

Sad but true... I was able to confirm the story from the sports info director at Darton State. This season will be the last for the wrestling program at the Georgia school.

It seems every time a few NJCAA adds teams someone will drop. NJCAA needs more teams, especially in the south and west coast.

BOOOOOOOOOOO! They went from the ground up to having some really good success in a short period of time. The loss of that program is bad for wrestling in that region and the NJCAA. They'll be down to about 40 teams next season.
