Virginia State Tournament Debacle

Recommended Posts

Due to potential weather, they're getting it done in one day as a single elimination tournament...

1:00 : Weigh ins
3:00-6:00 : Quarter Finals
6:00-8:00 : Semi Finals
8:00-10 : Finals
3/4 mats 1 and 4
1/2 Mats 2 and 3

This after moving to 6 divisions 2 years back.

they were going to give top 6 this year, not top 8 like last year (agreed, that was crazy). as is now, lose in quarters, done.

will impact team races as well. looking at 4A for example, two top teams Hanover and Fauquier. Hanover more top heavy, but Fauquier with more total placer types...now Fauquier will likely lose points from kids who looked like they would place 5-6.

of course that's based on rankings and brackets...settling on mat as always will decide it between those two but again, this change not only screws the kids but actual team races could be screwy too.

Really, winning a state title, in a state with 6 divisions, is simply unfair to the wrestlers.

Sorry, but when NY went to D 1 D 2 it was the beginning of the end.

I know of no wrestler, who ever won or placed in a state meet with one division who supports multiple divisions.

Political correctness on a Zen level.

Colorado once had 3 divisions, then watered it down to 5 for a few years and had a tournament of champions the next week but was optional.  They went back to having 4 divisions which is still probably too many.  Having 6 divisions in Virginia sounds like a bad joke.

Virginia actually has 7 divisions.  6 X public schools and 1 X private.  The VA private states is also occuring this weekend but in a normal 32/16 man bracket with double elimination from the first round.

The breakout looks like:

6A: 52

5A: 52

4A: ~53

3A: ~51

2A: 35

1A: 31

Private Schools: ~29 (but that is a quick guess, don't have hard numbers for them)

*There are more schools in the breakout but theses numbers only include schools that have wrestling.

*6A = largest schools, 1A = smaller schools.

*6A through 1A schools are members of the VHSL each having their own state championship.

*The private schools are independent and also have their own state championship for a total of 7 state championships per year in Virginia.
