Pa Predictions

Recommended Posts

Heading into Regionals this weekend, will have a better idea then -- some weights are still pretty open; additionally, some of the favorites (106 AAA, 138 AA, 170 AA at least) are out, including 2 returning state finalists.  Below are some of the more obvious ones, or ones with nationally ranked guys.

106:  AA Gavin Teasdale (Jefferson Morgan), AAA ??.

113:  AA ??.  AAA Devin Brown (Franklin Regional) or Dan Moran (Northampton).

120:  AA Brian Courtney (Athens).  AAA Spencer Lee (Franklin Regional) -- only question is if anyone survives the full 6:00.

126:  AA ??.  AAA Gus Solomon (Franklin Regional) or Luke Karam (Bethlehem Catholic).

132:  Korbin Myers (Boiling Springs) or Mickey Phillippi (Derry).  AAA Luke Pletcher (Latrobe).

138:  AA ??.  AAA Sam Krivus (Hempfield) or Cameron Coy (Penn Trafford).

145:  AA Kent Lane, Southern Columbia.  AAA Mike Kemerer (Franklin Regional) or Pat Duggan (Cumberland Valley); 2 other nationally ranked guys.

152:  AA Billy Barnes, Southern Columbia.  AAA Vincenzo Joseph (Pittsburgh Central Catholic); 3 other nationally ranked guys.

160:  AA Cole Walter, Mifflinburg.  AAA Josh Shields (Franklin Regional).

170:  AA ??.  AAA ??.

182:  AA ??.  AAA Kellan Stout (Mt. Lebanon) or John Jakobsen (Stroudsburg).

195:  AA Dylan Reynolds, Saegertown.  AAA Jan Johnson (Gov. Mifflin).

220:  AA Buzzy Maines, West Branch.  AAA Jordan Wood (Boyertown).

285:  AA Allan Beattie, Burrell.  AAA Bo Spiller (Solanco) or Andrew Dunn (Bethlehem Catholic).

Returning champs:  Brown (2x), Lee, Jake Riegel (120 AAA), Karam, Myers, Phillippi (2013), Pletcher (2x), Krivus (2013), Coy, Joseph, Johnson

Returning finalists:  Moran, Lane, Kemerer (3x), Duggan, Barnes, Shields, Stout, Maines, Wood (2x)

Caveat:  In PA it's not unusual for the best 2 wrestlers to meet in semis or even the quarters.  It's also not unusual for the top 3 wrestlers in a weight to all be in the same half of the bracket.  Reason:  PIAA does not seed, instead uses a set of pre-drawn brackets which are kept private until after regionals, and then fills in the names before states.

There is only 1 exception to the pre-drawn brackets:  when 2 returning PA champs are at the same weight, both were champs last year, and both are regional champs this year.  (This year that can happen only at 120 AAA, if Riegel wins Northeast Regional).  Then the PIAA will find a different pre-drawn bracket separating the champs until the finals.

106 AAA: Matt Parker now that Riley Palmer missed weight

170 AAA: Kyle Gentile may be the best. Not sure.

After a quick scan of Regional brackets, I'll add these guys:

106 AAA:  Matt Parker, Pennridge

113 AA:  Joe Lobeck, Lancaster Catholic or Max Murin, Central Cambria

126 AA:  Jonathan Gabriel, Bedford or Triston Law, Forest Hills.

138 AA:  Kyle Shoop, Boiling Springs.  I missed him as a returning state runner-up.  Tyler Vath (Saegertown) also possible.

170 AA:  Nick Stephani, Troy or Jason Lynch, Saucon Valley.  Really open weight, but not as wide open as ...

170 AAA:  DJ Hollingshead, Altoona -- and about 5 or 6 other guys:  Gentile; Teshon Campbell, Penn Hills; Idris White, Father Judge; Austin Bell, Belle Vernon; Jared Siegrist, Manheim Central all look good.

182 AA:  Corey Hazel, Penns Valley; Garrett Hoffman, Montoursville; or Colton Dull, Bermudian Springs

I like LeBarron, but come on, Myers and Phillippi are both nationally-ranked returning state champs.  Myers is headed to Edinboro and Phillippi will be a D1 recruit next year.  Really high hurdle for LeBarron.  But good chance he's a finalist if PA brackets Myers and Phillippi together, away from him.

who are the AA favorites that are out? counting marks and lane?

Yes, Blake Marks and Todd Lane.  Both are returning state runners-up for Southern Columbia.

Always a shame to lose top guys, and especially for Marks -- he's really entertaining, a toss monster.

Just to clarify for the non-PA folks here:  Todd's cousin Kent Lane is still healthy, also a state runner-up from Southern Columbia.

At 195- Jan Johnson got beat at regionals and finished 3rd.  Tommy Rayhart (Big Spring), who beat Johnson 3-2, won the weight beating  Francis Duggan, a freshman and younger brother of Pat Duggan, (Cumberland Valley) in the finals.  I think Duggan and Rayhart both have wins over each other.  Phipps out of the WPIAL is also pretty tough.

AA 132:  Yes, Myers and Phillippi traded 1st/3rd placements the past two years.  Phillippi only beat Lebarron 2-0 in the 2nd round consolation last year.   I'll stand by my prediction for the junior from Warrior Run to make a statement this year.

I don't know what to make of a 2-0 Phillippi match without video.  He's not exactly Mr. Offense First.

Big news out of Pittsburgh:  Gus Solomon (Franklin Regional) withdrew from SW Regionals with a shoulder injury, was not cleared by doctors before tourney started.  Solomon is #1 in the state at AAA 126 and ranked nationally.

This could have just handed Bethlehem Catholic the team title at states.

Lee and McCoy have won so far tonight. Lee won by fall.

132 - Pletcher and Headlee are in OT tied at 1-1. Pletcher had a great chance quickly in OT but Headlee fought him off. Rideouts. Pletcher rides the full 30. Headlee shoves him out. Restart at 0:24. 12 seconds, 5 seconds, Headlee rides him out but not before opicking up a stalling warning.  Pletcher is going down for this last rideout. Headlee rides him out in ultimate tiebreaker and wins it 2-1. Both wrestlers shake hands.

138 Sam Krivus vs. Cameron Coy - Krivus has a bunch of close wins over Coy this year. Scoreless after 1 period. 2nd period Copy escape. 1-0  Krivus with the TD, 2-1. Reversal Coy, 3-2. 24 seconds left in 2nd. Period ends 3-2. Not sure how they started, but Krivus got a TD and leads 4-3. Time runs out and it ends 4-3.

145 Michael Kemerer vs. Jarod Verkleeren Period 1 Verkleeren's shoulder taped up. Kemerer changing levels but not getting enough depth on his shots. Scoreless after 1. 2nd Period Kemerer takes down and escapes right away, 1-0. 1 minute left. Ties. Out of bounds for the 3rd time this period. Period ends 1-0. 3rd Period Kemerer explodes on Verkleeren. And there is the FALL!

152 Vincenzo Joseph vs. Josh Maruca Period 1 Joseph in on the right leg and they go out of bounds. Joseph TD, Escape Maruca 2-1. Joseph with a double, 4-1. Maruca working up as time is running out but Joseph drives him back to the mat and the period ends 4-1. Maruca takes down and escapes, 4-2. Quick TD for Joseph, 6-2. Esc 6-3. Joseph drives maruca out of bounds. Now Joseph with another TD and it is 8-3. Joseph rides out the remainder of the 2nd, 8-3 after 2. 3rd Period Esc Joseph, 9-3. Maruca taking shots but Joseph with the heavy hips. Now Joseph with another TD, 11-3, Esc 11-4, Another TD 13-4. Esc 13-5. Joseph in on a single, but OOB. Now another shot from Joseph and he gets it to win 15-5. That's a big win over a wrestler of Maruca's caliber.

160 Josh Shields vs. Paul Dunn Shields leads 4-1 after 1. Period 2 Shields is pretty much dominating on their feet.  10-4 after 2 periods. Shields with a reversal, 12-4. Dunn reversal, now Shields ESC. 13-6. TD Shields, 15-6. 40 seconds left. ESC 15-7. Shields trips Dunn to the mat and it ends 17-7.

170 TeShan Campbell vs. Austin Bell,  Scoreless after 1. Campbell takes down and gets a quick ESC, 1-0. Bell with a head snap, but nothing. Bell with underhooks and he throws Campbell to the mat near the edge ... nothing. That was close. Blood time for Bell. They are putting a wrap around Bell's forehead. Period ends 1-0. 3rd Period Bell with a couple of granby's but they go OOB. Bell stands up but he's returned. Bell works up again, Campbell attempts a cradle, Bell fighting it off and they go OOB. Still 1-0. Bell stands, but Campbell returns him. Only 36 seconds left as they go OOB. Re start with Bell still down. More blood time. Bell to his feet, Campbell returns him. Riolling, but Campbell still on top. 9 seconds left. Campbell rides him all the way out. Ends 1-0.

182 Kellan Stout vs. Milton Kobaly     Period 1, Stout with a headlock and a TD, 2-0. Kobaly ESC 2-1. Stout with another TD and Kobaly is shaken up. He is in some pain and the trainer is tending to him. He's done. Injury Default at 1:37 of Period 1.
