Pssst.....Ohio State

Recommended Posts

I remember the conversations from 10 years back about how, especially, Penn State, but Ohio State too, were sleeping giants in wrestling. How galling it was to see what was happening at those two programs. Then Gene Smith became athletic director. That he cared about wrestling was in his background and he very likely would not accept where the program stood. He picked Tom Ryan to coach the team and the rest is history.

Kyle Snyder can be fairly compared to David Taylor not in style but in temperament.  And the same thing happened to Taylor.  He managed to overcome it.

I think he will come back vastly improved and own the weight class.  Only Cox, McIntosh and Burak return among the other really good 197's to give him a battle.

Why was the decision made for this kid to cut rather than hit the weights and bulk up for heavyweight - where he is destined.  Dude was at 220 all four years of high school.  Getting thrown as he did by Gadson suggests perhaps he cut too much.

Who knows what he actually weighed though, he may have walked around at 215 and just chose not to cut. If that was the case then 197 would have been the best fit for him, 285 from 220 is a lot of weight to put on and 15 or so pounds of fat to trim off seems more doable.

You're making way too much out of the result of this bout.  Snyder made a strategic error in terms of how he tried to finish his single.  this led to him getting caught in a bad position.  It's a simple fix.  Wrestlers make adjustments all the time.  Gadson won but to say he wanted it more than Snyder (or McIntosh, Schiller, Burak and Cox) is over the top.  As to the weight cut, Snyder wrestled virtually every major player at 197 and did well (split with McIntosh and Burak, 2-0 vs Schiller and Huntley, beat Cox).  Gadson proved to be the best wrestler.  Kudos to him.
