Reward the Bold

Recommended Posts

Every sport has had to periodically readjust the balance between offense and defensive.

In the 1960’s,  the MLB was becoming boring because the pitchers like Bob Gibson were dominating so they changed the height of the mound. In the early 90’s, the NBA was becoming unwatchable because no one could drive the lane without getting fouled so they changed what it was acceptable for a defender to do.  In the early 2000’s, the NFL was boring because the Oakland Raiders had made it impossible for a receiver to get downfield so they added the five yard bump rule.

In every instance, the structure of the game was significantly changed to restore the balance between offense and defense, The time has come for the rules of college wrestling to be changed so that offensive wrestler are rewarded for taking the risk of being offensive.

When implementing a change, we must first decide on the things that we want to eliminate.

My personal list of things that I do not want to see any more are

0-0 first periods

being able to win a match without an offensive score

a wrestler taking an obvious defensive position while wrestling from the feet

boring top riding

Now that I have listed the types of behaviors I want to eliminate. I would like to suggest three rule changes that I would like to see implemented

Rule 1:

An additional riding point can only be reward if a wrestler has scored a takedown, back points, a penalty point such as locked hands. Stalling will not make a wrestling eligible for a additional riding point

Rationale:

This rule is similar to the current team scoring concept that you can not get a five team points without back points. This rule eliminated the endless takedowns matches. This rule would eliminate unnecessary riding.

Rule 2:

A wrestler that goes to a knee before or immediately upon tying up in the neutral situation with an opponent shall be given a stalling call

Rationale: I

It is almost impossible to score a takedown from the neutral position when your opponent is on his knees and it is almost impossible to score a takedown when you are on your knees.

Rule 3:

If a match ends without an offensive point such as takedown, back points, or a penalty point besides stalling being rewarded, the match shall be declared a draw in a dual meet Neither team will receive points and the match shall not be part of either wrestlers official record. It will be like the match did not happen.

In a tournament situation, the match shall be decided by the flip of a coin.

Rationale:

My rationale for the tourney advancement rule is that neither wrestler has earned the right of advancement so let the decision be arbitrary. I would prefer an arbitrary decision rather than current 30 second ride out. In the 30 second ride out, wrestlers are using techniques they only use in 30 second ride outs. It no longer wrestling; it is hog wrestling.

Rule 4:

If a match ends in tie and offensive points have been scored the following criteria shall be used to determine the winner:

the wrestler with most offensive point is declared the winner in regulation,

if the wrestlers have the same number of offensive points, there shall be a 1 minute sudden death period on the feet

If match is tied after the 1 minute sudden death overtime, a second 1 minute sudden death overtime shall be completed, if the wrestlers are tied after the second sudden death overtime the secondary referee shall determine the wrestler that has initiated the most offensive takedown attempts in the second overtime

Rationale:

When a match is tied, the more offensive wrestler shall always be given preference.

I believe that these rule changes will help restore the balance between offense and defense in college wrestling without fundementally changing the foundation of folkstyle wrestling,

I love folkstyle wrestling because of it rewards power and fitness. But something must be changed because it has become possible to win without offensive.

How about:

1st period- one wrestler must wrestle with one hand tied behind back.  The tied wrestler will be determined by coin toss (or ball grab)

2nd period - bottom man will wrestle with both feet tied together.

3rd period -  again - bottom man again must wrestle with feet tied together.

Special velcro ties will enable bondage to be established quickly, with little more delay than a typical " blood time"

I guarantee this will incease not only points to be scored, but number of falls.

We might even pick up some new fans from the S$M crowd.,
