Pico is not making the 2016 Olympic team

Recommended Posts

Remember Cejudo made some huge strides in the year leading up to his Olympic run. And Pico has already shown he can put moves together on some very tough world level wrestlers. It's not far fetched to believe Pico could do enough over the next year to be in contention to win the OTT. I wouldn't say he is the favorite for the spot, but he could put a solid run together to take the spot. I tend to agree that 2020 would be his best spot for making the team and possibly Medaling.

I didn't see the match, but I did just finish reading up on it. This quote:

"“That is what this about. This is a step for what really matters, winning the World Cup, the U.S. Open, the Trials and the World Championships. This is a good opponent. Aaron Pico, I respect him,” said Metcalf.

pretty muchputs it in perspective. Metcalf knows this is the first of many battles. Pico didn't show any of his stuff. Probably used this match as a scouting and learning opportunity. He got a feel of Metcalf and him and his coaches can work from there. For MEtcalf, there isn't a whole lot he can work on in terms of distancing himself from the young phenom. Like the Russians, we wipe the mat with them in NY and other out of season events and expectations go through the roof. Then come prime time, they whoop on us like a bunch of newly adopted gingers.

As a Pico fan I am VERY encouraged. As a MEtcalf fan (hoping he gets on the team for a final time in 2015) I am concerned. We just saw a teenager go out there and allow 1 offensive score to Brent Metcalf. This is going to get good.

What stuff has he hit in the past that he didn't try last night?

During all the Pico hype I was thought people needed to relax. I never thought Pico would make the 2016 team, and I thought it was way to early to even consider whether he would be on track to compete for a spot on the 2020 team.

But now that everyone is down on the kid, I'll be the contrarian again. Pico said he's focusing on wrestling until 2020. (http://www.fightline.com/bellator-mma-signs-top-prospect-aaron-pico/).

He needs to improve a lot in order to contend for a world/Olympic medal. And the chances of anyone improving that much and winning a gold medal are slim to none, and that includes Pico. You can never tell how much someone will be able to improve. So if I were him I would go straight to MMA because he is basically guaranteed eventual paydays there. But it's his life. He wants a crack at the 2020 Olympics.

So he's 18, and he has five shots at making a world/Olympic team before the 2020 Olympic trials begin. In the meantime, he'll develop from an 18 year old kid who is two years removed from high school wrestling practices to a 23 year old full-time wrestler with five-plus years of senior level freestyle international competition behind him. At this point, there's no reason to think he'll have less of a shot at the 2020 Olympic team than anyone else.

If any other high-school-age wrestler wrestled a former Hodge winner and world team member that tough, we'd be blown away.

I*'m certainly not blown away, this is about what I expected and I've posted as much.   A slight edge to Metcalf in a tightly contested match and that's what we got, despite Pico not opening up and showing his offense, and basically being handcuffed by the referee as well.

I love Brent metcalf.   Yes he was difficult to like during college with his thug behavior and classless antics (nearly shoving the NCAA champion off the elevated mat after getting smashed in the final) but he has changed.   And he has paid his dues.   Now he stands to get knocked off the #1 ranking perch by a teenager.   There isn't an iceberg's chance in hell he holds Pico off till 2016, Pico is just so far ahead of the curve, it's not even fair.   But I would love to see Brent get more more shot at worlds and then the weight class belongs to Pico for as long as he wants it.   I want Brent to get that elusive world level medal and then if he walks away for good, so be it.    I'm just not sure Pico is going to cooperate.    Lets see what happens at the open.     It wouldn't surprise me if Pico torches him.

As a fan of both Pico and Metcalf you must be very happy with the outcome.

Metcalf, well, he won, so that's good.  And Pico "didn't show any of his stuff", merely using this match to scout Metcalf, so as to overtake him the next time they meet.

You must be on cloud 9!!!

Rosie,

I wouldn't go as far as to say cloud 9.   Perhaps 5 or 6.

To be frank, I'm a bit nervous for Brent.

He may never get on another world team and as stated numerous times, I'd like to see him get one more and  also that elusive world medal.   Even a bronze, so long as it's from the world championship.;   Hell if they make a tin one, I'll settle for that.

Oh Bucky, where does one start?

Type Aaron Pico into www.youtube.com search function, and watch the 40 videos of him and the variety of offensive onslaught he puts on international opposition.

Do you want me to link his matches directly Bucky?   I'll do that for you if you aren't capable of locating them yourself.   Give it a shot first and if not, in box me.  I'm happy to walk you there, Bucky.

How could you watch all those videos from dial up on the farm???

I thought being a wrestling expert like yourself, you would've understood my question... Apparently not. Specifically I meant to say Pico hits the majority of his arsenal (snaps to front heads to shots, and throw bys) all from the same righty collar tie. International guys may not have scouted him yet, but metcalf apparently has and stayed out of those ties. I think he may be challenged to score once the top guys scout him. Since you mentioned he was not trying, I was wondering if you've seen any video of him scoring with different offense other than mentioned above. If so, please post a video... I'm a big fan of Pico and hope he can expand his arsenal. And try not to lose your cool pal! :-)

Derrion Caldwell has given Pico a souting guide on how to destroy Metcalf.  Will he use it though?

You know, I wouldn't count out Pico based on this match. You know Schultz beat Monday right up till the '88 Olympic team trials and then took it to him. Kemp beat Schultz until the '84 Olympic team trials. It's not as if improving in the next year and a half would represent some heretofore unheard of rate of improvement. Plus Metcalf is likely improving much more slowly than Pico who's still adjusting to wrestling international senior level events.

Also, let's not forget that Metcalf has pretty much run the table with everyone in the US except Oliver who still couldn't finish a single takedown against him. Pico has fared as well if not a little better than every other American vs Metcalf lately.

I think its funny how some are so quick to judge based on the results of one match. Pico will be in VERY good position to win the trials in 2016. One match, win or lose, doesn't really mean all that much in the grand scheme of things. Cut the kid some slack.

In 2016, I don't think Pico wins a bracket that includes Metcalf, Oliver, and Stieber. I just don't.

And to really get a sense of how far Pico has to improve to win a medal, consider that Metcalf has never won a match at worlds.

I thought Kemp was in the middle of grad studies in 84, and came out of retirement or semi-retirement to go to OTTs.

Very well Bucky, apology accepted.   I had to go to the library to watch video.   As you astutely noted, the dial up takes way too long and unless it's porn, it isn't worth my time!

Feliz dia del conejo Bucky.

Gomez is a world silver medalist.   Just because Metcalf can't do it doesn't mean others who have lost to Metcalf can't either.  The logic just isn't sound.

Metcalf has his own issues and although I would love to see him win any color medal at worlds, he's running out of time.   He is far too one dimensional, he gets exposed far too often, and he isn't likely to make it out of the trials.   .

Oliver was really done in by the weight change.   He was right there knocking at the door but he just does not seem capable of cutting the additional weight.   This will be a 2 horse race and the young horse has made tremendous ground in the past year.   He's only a high school kid.   His ceiling is very high yet.
