different pairings over the years

Recommended Posts

They have used a multiple pool system where you had to win a pool of 3 or 4 to advance out into later rounds. They used a crappy line draw in 94 and 95 where if you lose your first match, you go into the loser bracket, but if you win your first match and then lose before the semifinals, you were eliminated.

The closest thing to a full wrestleback was the two pool system. I can't remember exactly how the 1996 pools were but Bruce Baumgartner was able to come back and wrestle for bronze against the guy that beat him earlier in the tournament.

did they ever use full wrestlebacks? when?

Trying to remember 1996 system (I worked the head table but can't remember exactly how the brackets worked) but oldrules is correct about wrestling Shumilin twice- and the loss wasn't in the first round. But It took me a while to find the results. By American bracketing standards it was an odd double elim but it was just that. Instead of byes early they were applied late on leading into the semis.
