Penn State banked four potential regulars, including three-time All-American Nico Megaludis at 125 pounds, effectively throwing in the towel on extending their four-year reign to five. Most of wrestling’s leading experts believe this has simply set the Nittany Lions up for another possible championship run. “Penn State, redshirting four pretty dang good guys to put their best team on the mat the following year, that sends a message that they’re all in,’’ said Brands. “Maybe some would say the challenge is insurmountable, but we’re not going to roll over and let ‘em scratch our belly, either.’’ http://siouxcityjournal.com/sports/wrestling/college/hersom-brands-hawkeyes-still-trying-to-get-back-on-top/article_3b6b1f3c-f307-5661-bd2b-4b42de947fc1.html

headshuck 2,587 Report post Posted May 7, 2015 (edited) I'm thinking there's a missing "not" in Brand's quote. “Penn State, redshirting four pretty dang good guys to put their best team on the mat the following year, that sends a message that they’re [not] all in,’’ said Brands. He will say whatever he wants if it serves his argument at that particular moment. He had absolutely nooooo problem redshirting Metcalf, Borschel, Slaton, and Leclere back in 2006 when had they wrestled, VT could have easily won the ACC championship had Slaton, Metcalf and Borschel not redshirted. Instead, Brands was loading up for following years. Exactly the same thing he is taking shots at PSU and OSU for. He is such a self absorbed, narcissist. He basically was praising Cael for redshirting his guys and reloading and never really mentioned OSU. So I don't think it goes against what he did at VT. So I think you owe Mr Brands an apology. I also think that the expectations for Brands at Virginia Tech in his first or second year are a little different than Brands at Iowa in his ninth. He recruits guys who are a lot of things. Who knows, if things continue how they've been at Iowa, he may find himself in the unemployment line at his local state office in Iowa City. I don't know. But in this case, in the above quote, I thought he was paying Cael the respect he deserves. Perhaps I read it wrong.
Idaho 1,325 Report post Posted May 10, 2015 Brands is stating a fact that Cael held four studs out for redshirt and this year they will be tough...I don't see where he criticized Cael at all -If anything he is predicting them as the favorites but they aren't just going to give it to them (hence, roll over and let them scratch their belly). Plasmodium 2,227 Report post Posted May 12, 2015 I wouldn't consider Brands the best coach, but he is definitely the most entertaining. He has an actual personality and I love his Midwest vernacular.
